Out late to watch the meteors

Got up around 2am this morning to go and watch for meteors. Really, we were already up since we were watching the Olympics live. We got a tip from some friends that early this morning (right after the moon set) is when the Perseids meteor shower would be at its peak. All the kids were remarkably easy to load up in the car and they were all (except Isaac) able to see their first meteors go flying by! Not bad for our first attempt at actually going out to see them.
I even managed to get a picture of one of the meteors. Its not the best shot, but if you look in the upper right hand corner of the picture, you can see the streak going across the sky. In the middle of the picture is the Little Dipper, and at the bottom is light from a major thunderstorm occurring over the Kansas plains. You’ll most likely have to open the full size version of the picture to see it. Click HERE for that full size image.
Even though we headed out away from the lights and were over 20+ miles from the city, there was still a lot of light pollution. Another hour east would have made things spectacular, but considering the kids and the lack of planning, we were all very happy with the results.

    Hey,

Cool pic. neat experience. Delivering papers that night, I actually caught site of one. It was in about the same position in the sky and traveling the same direction as the one you captured. I wish I had a screen big enough to see the large image all at one time. Beautiful.
